The Iowan
As Art Director of The Iowan I was responsible for the entire magazine’s overall design, photo direction and styling, technical illustration, and the layout of each page. I collaborated closely with editorial staff about the presentation of issue and story themes and all content and visuals.
I directed and styled both studio and location photo shoots with both staff and freelance photographers and selected and color corrected all images.
I created a series of illustrated maps (see example below) for each of The Iowan’s regional travel stories.
Fon’s and Porter’s Love of Quilting
As Art Director of Love of Quilting I was responsible for all layout creation and overall visual design. I created all diagrams and styled and directed most photo shoots. Early on, I led a design refresh focused on making the quilt design instructions easier to read and follow. I was also in charge of creating bookazines, premium books and gifts, and digital content.
I was also design lead for two magazine launches: Quilty and Quilting Quickly. Quilty was focused on modern quilt designs for a younger audience; Quilting Quickly was for a more traditional quilting audience, but one that wanted easier and faster quilt designs.
Cuisine at home
As a graphic designer I helped conceptualize and implement both story and recipe concepts. I directed, propped, and styled both indoor and outdoor food photography focused on food and cooking techniques.
I designed layouts for both Cuisine and as well as for a variety of special interest books, each of which focused on a particular food type. I helped create book templates to ensure a cohesive, branded design across multiple publications.
I also did some hand modeling for the technique-based images.
